  • Whether you're brand new or returning for another exciting chapter, welcome to the 2026–2027 school year at East Cooper Montessori Charter School—a school built on thoughtful choices made by families who lead with both their head and their heart.

While summer may still be in the air, we’re already hard at work preparing for our 24th year of delivering exceptional Montessori education in Charleston County. From fresh supplies to new procedures, consider this your friendly nudge to grab a lemonade, find some shade, and begin checking off your back-to-school list.

Here you’ll find important updates and logistics—including a snapshot of what makes ECMCS such a dynamic and inspiring place to learn—and what’s new this year.

  • This past spring, ECMCS was honored as the #1 Top Public Montessori School in the Lowcountry, a recognition that reflects the excellence, dedication, and passion of our entire school community.

We’re equally proud to share that ECMCS received an “Excellent” rating for academic achievement based on the 2024–2025 spring state assessments. This year has also been filled with meaningful growth for our students, and we are proud to share the strong progress reflected in our data. From fall to spring, reading proficiency increased from 57% to 80%, and math proficiency grew from 32% to 77% of students performing at or above grade level.

These gains reflect not only the hard work and perseverance of our students, but also the dedication of our teachers and staff who provide thoughtful, individualized support each day. Together, we are building a strong foundation for continued success and a lifelong love of learning for every child.

  • We love our families—and we love spending time with you! Whether it’s spirit nights, movie nights, or new events like bingo and trivia, ECMCS hosts gatherings that build community and strengthen the joyful culture we all value.

But beyond the fun lies a deeper truth: as a charter school, ECMCS does not receive the same funding for facilities as traditional public schools. All capital improvements—including our long-awaited gym—fall to us.

That’s where the Annual Fund comes in. This is our most important fundraiser, and it powers everything that makes ECMCS extraordinary:

    • Two teachers in every classroom, so your child is never without adult support

    • Beautifully prepared Montessori environments with specialized materials and furniture we call “the third teacher”

    • A signature STEM program that sparks innovation and curiosity

    • A year-round theater program where students shine with creativity and confidence

    • A highly qualified faculty, working in harmony to deliver engaging, intentional learning

We’re aiming for 100% family participation—because every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference.

  • Last year marked a new chapter in ECMCS school spirit! We proudly introduced Cooper the Eagle, our first-ever school mascot, who brought joy and pride to games, assemblies, and events. Our cheerleading squad added energy and encouragement to our athletics program and several of our sports teams made it to the playoffs!

Whether your child is interested in sports, arts, leadership, or service, there is something for everyone at ECMCS.

  • Our Parent Teacher Network (PTN) continues to play a vital role in uniting families and supporting our school’s mission. From planning events to envisioning the future, ECMCS parents help shape a vibrant and welcoming community.

This spring’s Annual Auction was not just a fundraising success—it was a celebration of connection, purpose, and shared joy. Next year, look for the first annual 5K race!

Service Learning/Peace Projects are group projects outside the school day to serve our community. We will be offering these projects quarterly.  Some examples are DNR Oyster Restoration, Beach Sweeps, ECCO, Candy for Soldiers and beautification projects on campus. These projects are an opportunity to network with ECMCS families and do impactful projects with your family.

  • As we begin another year of learning, growing, and building something incredible—together—please take time to review the updates included throughout this site, including important details on Silent Dismissal, back-to-school logistics, and PTN news, plus after school and enrichment sign ups.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: New families are encouraged to park and walk their student into school on the first day only. ECMCS begins each school year with a fun welcome-back celebration at the Myrick Road entrance featuring music, bubbles, and noisemakers. For students who prefer a quieter start to the day, the Rifle Range Road entrance offers a calm and peaceful alternative.

We are grateful for your partnership and can’t wait to see what this year holds.

    With excitement,
    Jody Swanigan, Principal
    & the ECMCS Governing Board
